Books to last a lifetime
Here at Wenlock Books we celebrate real books which will last a lifetime: not just the standard editions but also quality imprints of the classics such as Persephone for twentieth century women’s writing, Little Toller for British nature writing and rural life, Vintage Children’s Classics for young ones, Slightly Foxed for memoirs, and the Collector’s Library for essential volumes in pocket-sized editions with their beautiful gold edges, pale blue covers and lovely ribbon book-mark.
One of the benefits of being a small, independent bookshop is that our stock is carefully curated. Every book is here for a reason and has been chosen by us based not on hype, but on word-of-mouth, critical reviews, the tests of time and our own reading. Whether it is the latest and best of contemporary fiction, much-loved classics or forgotten treasures, you are sure to find something wonderful to nurture, entertain, challenge or inspire you.
If it’s good, we’ll stock it, whatever the subject. Visit us to find out what else we’ve got on our shelves, ask for our latest recommendations or share your own.
Upstairs in our extensive second-hand books department, you can browse for hours in tranquillity, surrounded by ancient oak beams and with lots of snug corners to lose yourself in. There’s also a coffee making area where you can help yourself to delicious coffee or a range of teas. Make yourself at home!
We have dedicated sections for books on Shropshire and the Welsh Marches, topography, history, military history, transport, travel, biography, fiction, poetry, plays, art, architecture, nature, children’s books, music, cookery, gardening and more, as well as some beautiful rare and collectable volumes.
Books for charity
Outside in our ‘honesty alley’, there are secondhand books for sale to raise much-needed money for the Friends of Conakry Refugee School in Guinea, West Africa. These books can be bought at any time of day or night – if we are not open, just pop your donation through the letterbox. The charity is especially close to our hearts as it was founded by a former member of staff and we maintain very close links with them. www.fcrs.org.uk
Do we buy secondhand books? – usually “Yes!” but at the moment, “Sorry, no!” We’ll let you know as soon as normal service is resumed.
Yes, we do. But, as space is at a premium, occasionally we have to say ‘No more!’ If you have some secondhand books that you would like us to consider, please email us in the first instance with a very general description of the books you want to sell (subject, age, condition, etc) and we will get back to you. Even if we can’t take them, we might know someone who can.
Our children’s corner is lively, welcoming and full of the best children’s books to encourage a lifelong love of reading. For our youngest visitors, we have a box of toys and books to play with while their grown-ups browse the shelves.
Designed for small hands, board books can withstand almost anything – from a good chew by gummy teeth to mashed banana hurled in an exuberant fit of joy. They also have good stories in them.
Picture books are that crucial stepping stone from board book to ‘real’ book. Full of colour and warmth, these books have stunning visuals and minimal (but engaging) text to start drawing young children into the magical world of story.
Discovering captivating stories is a great thrill for budding readers and a deep pleasure for parents as they watch their child unlock the codes of words and reading. We pick titles carefully so that children can embark on their own reading adventure with confidence and enthusiasm.
Under the covers by torchlight…
We provide the very best fiction for independent readers, from the classics to titles by the most exciting contemporary children’s authors. We don’t sell torches, but we do secretly support any child that wants to stay up reading past bedtime!
Young adult books are the springboard to a vast new world of adult literature. As with the books we stock for younger children, we make sure these titles are not only good, but time-stoppingly, heart-thumpingly, mind-expandingly good. Many of these titles are popular with our grown up customers, too.
… and more
We also stock children’s poetry, activity and sticker books, and a number of titles to aid learning. We hope you will find the right book for your child on our shelves but, if not, we can always order it for you.
Bits and Bobs
Our greetings cards are spread throughout the shop on every available wall space. There are hundreds to choose from – from beautiful cards by talented contemporary artists such as Rob Barnes and Dee Nickerson, to stunning wildlife and landscape photographic cards by wonderful local artists.
For writers, diarists and inveterate scribblers, we stock Lamy fountain pens and rollerballs, and a range of quality notebooks to capture thoughts and ideas in style.
Other literary-inspired gifts include mugs, bookmarks and bags. To wrap it all up, there’s some lovely, Swiss decorative paper from Sophie’s Ribbons – and more besides.
Our stock is regularly refreshed, so pop in to see the latest goodies!
As well as our own Wenlock Books gift tokens, we also supply and accept National Book Tokens.
