The journey

It starts with the journey from there to here …

We spend two days on the move, covering some 500 miles by car, and a ferry journey.

It’s an important time ~ a letting go and a coming on.

Potree, Isle of Skye

We always enjoy our journey to the Western Isles, and we have many stopping off points for coffee, lunch, supper, and sleep. This journey was very different, in that very few places were open apart from Motorway Service Stations! But we stopped with friends for a garden brunch, laid our heads down in Perth, and had a delicious lunch in Kyle of Lochalsh, in sight of the home of Gavin Maxwell.

We also listen to Desert Island Discs and some of our favourite Scottish music (on this journey Capercaillie and Tidelines, among others.) Two episodes of Desert Island Discs were really special for me. One was with Maria Balshaw, now Director of the Tate, but at one time I was lucky enough to have her as my MPhil supervisor at Birmingham University. Secondly, Bernadine Evaristo whose musical choices I loved! Both were inspirational ~ and I am now determined to reconnect with my passion for writing by women of colour: watch this space!
